To ease out your task of calculating numbers, you can set formulas in your Excel sheet and add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers in just a jiffy. The multiplication function in this application is commonly known as the PRODUCT function. It will be useful for you to learn the common ways in which you could multiply; for your benefit, we are sharing with you the steps that you can replicate.
Before you set out to learn the steps to apply multiplication formulas on Excel 2010, you must also know the common symbols that you will have to throughout use. Symbols have different meanings across the different applications and on Excel 2010:
* Asterisk denotes multiplication {A*B means multiply A and B}
= Is also used to find the product between the digits displayed in two or more cells {=PRODUCT(B2:B5,3)
: Is used for multiplying a range of numbers by another number (notice the use of the : symbol in the above instance)
For further details on using the PRODUCT feature, check out the below:
· The Excel multiplication formula consists of the ‘=’ sign, followed by a list of two or more numbers with the ‘Asterisk’ operator in between them.
· Press ‘Enter’ and it multiplies the numbers and returns the result.
· As with all Excel formulas, you can use references to cells containing numbers with the ‘Asterisk’ operator in between them instead of typing in the numbers directly.
· Press ‘Enter’ and it multiplies the contents of the cells and returns the result.
· Excel also provides a built-in ‘Product Function’ that can be used to perform multiplication in Excel.
· Type ‘=PRODUCT(reference to first cell containing number : reference to last cell containing number)’ that you want to multiply together.
· Press ‘Enter’ and the function multiply together the values in cells and return the result.
For simple multiplication tasks, you can use:
To multiply two or more numbers in one cell
o On the cell where you want the multiplication result to display, type the = sign
o Enter the numbers you want to multiply separating them by the * sign (5*2*2)
o Hit the ‘Enter’ key and the result will instantly be displayed (20 is your result)
Multiply numbers using cell references
o Type the numbers you want to multiply in the required cells (2 in A1 and 3 in B1)
o Start the formula in the cell you want the result to display by entering the = sign (in C1)
o Give the cell references such as A1*B1
o On hitting the ‘Enter’ key, the cell C1 will display number 6, the result to the above
This formula is particularly handy in instances where you have different values in different cells and you want to separately find the results. For example, A1*A2, D2*D5, C2*C3. Simply by changing the values of the cells, you can find the desired results without changing the formula.
Multiply a Range of Numbers by a Number
o Start the formula by typing = in the desired cell
o Enter the formula =PRODUCT(B2:B5,3)
o So, if you had 2 in the cells B2, B3, B4, B5 and you wanted the result to be multiplied by 3, you could apply the formula above and derive the result which will be 48
