Do I have to uninstall Office 2010 Beta before I can install the RTM 2010? The reason I ask is that when I open the executable, it counts up but doesn't do anything--including not tell me I have to uninstall. I have XP SP3 and have been running the Beta without problem.

Uninstalling Office 2010 and installing RTM 2010 is not as simple as it appears on text. Different issues may arise while doing so; here are some tips to install RTM 2010 and troubleshoot the issues.

Here we have explained uninstalling Office 2010 Beta and installing RTM 2010 in three different situations:

Scene 1: Uninstall Office 2010 & Fix RTM installation errors
      (1) Office 2010 Beta 32-bit to be uninstalled from Windows® 7 Home Premium 32-bit system
      (2) Uninstall Office 2010 Beta by going to ‘Control Panel’, select ‘Program and Features’. Choose ‘Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010’, right-click it and select ‘Uninstall’. Click “Yes” when the confirmation dialogue box pops-up.
      (3) Wait for the process to end and reboot the system to complete the process.
      (4) Now try to install RTM 2010. This is where the issues crop up.
While trying to install RTM 2010, the following error is displayed even though Office 2010 Beta is already uninstalled. “Microsoft Office 2010 does not support upgrading from a prerelease version of Microsoft® Office 2010.You must first uninstall any prerelease version of Microsoft Office 2010 products and associated technologies. Correct the issue(s) listed above and re-run setup.” This error is due to the leftover Office apps or other stand alone Office products in your PC.
      (5) To remove leftover Office apps or other stand alone Office products, a cleanup utility is required.
      (6) Download and install Windows Cleanup utility from Microsoft® site.
      (7) After installing the utility, go to Start → All Programs → Windows Install Clean Up to launch the utility. Look up the list and remove any Office program you find there. Take special care to remove only Office programs on the list. Google whichever program you are not sure of. Changes made here will be permanent.
      (8) Once you are done, reboot to finish the process.
      (9) Try to install RTM 2010 once again. If you receive an error during the install process, “Setup has detected legacy groove or Microsoft Groove Server on this system…” go to C:UsersusernameAppDataLocalMicrosoft and delete remaining MS Office folders.
      (10) The issue is resolved, try to install RTM again.

Scene 2 Uninstalling Office 2010 Beta not possible through ‘Programs and Features’
      (1) Here we have Office Professional Plus 2010 Beta installed on a Windows® 7 Home Premium 32-bit system. The problem here is Office 2010 Beta not being able to uninstall via ‘Programs and Features’.
      (2) To resolve this, download and install the Windows Installer Clean up from Microsoft site and launch it. Scroll down to Microsoft® Office 2010 Beta, highlight it. In case you see any other Office 2010, 2007, or 2003 entries, hold the “Shift” key and highlight them all. Click “Remove”. Click “OK” in the warning dialogue box.
      (3) Once this is over, we need to delete the Registry Keys. Click ‘Start’, type “regedit” in the search box and press “Enter”. Go to
      HKEY_CURRENT_USER Software Microsoft Office
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE Software Microsoft Office
      and delete them.
      (4) Go to C: Program Files and find folders Microsoft Office, OfficeUpdate, or OfficeUpdate14. Rename the folders to “foldername_OLD.”
      (5) Then go into C:UsersusernameAppDataLocalMicrosoft and delete any existing MS Office folders.
      (6) Now, delete temporary files from the Temp folder. Click ‘Start’ type “%temp%” in the search box. Select all the items in the Temp folder and delete.
RTM 2010 should install without any issues now.

      Scene 3 Uninstall Office 2007 and Install 2010 32-Bit on x64 Windows® 7
      (1) We are uninstalling Office Professional 2007 and installing Office Professional Plus 2010 32-Bit edition on a Windows® Ultimate 64-bit computer. This PC originally had Office 2010 Beta 64-bit installed. It was uninstalled and Office 2007 was installed.
      (2) Go to ‘Programs and Settings’ and Uninstall Microsoft® Office Professional 2007. Restart the PC after the program uninstalls.
      (3) Download and install Windows Cleanup utility from Microsoft® site.
      (4) After installing the utility, go to Start → All Programs → Windows Install Clean Up to launch the utility. Look up the list and remove any Office program you find there. Take special care to remove only Office programs on the list. Google whichever program you are not sure of. Changes made here will be permanent.
      (5) Once you are done, reboot to finish the process.
      (6) Go to Start and type “regedit” in the search box.
      (7) Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER Software Microsoft Office and delete the folder.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE Software Microsoft Office and delete them as well.
      (8) Next go to C:Users usernameAppData Local Microsoft and delete any Office folders.
      (9) Now delete temporary files from the Temp folder. Click ‘Start’ type “%temp%” in the search box. Select all the items in the Temp folder and delete.
      (10) If you try to install RTM 2010 now, you might come across this error, “Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010 encountered an error during setup” To resolve this issue, go to command prompt and run “secedit /configure /cfg %windir%infdefltbase.inf /db defltbase.sdb /verbose”.
      Successfully install RTM 2010 now.
