Junk E-mail Settings in Microsoft® Office 2010

Junk e-mail is an unsolicited e-mail that wants to sell you something. Junk e-mail is often sent as spam i.e., a single e-mail message broadcast to hundreds or thousands of unknowing recipients. It is usually ‘anonymous’ so that you may not be able to write back to the address that is listed as the sender of the message. Junk e-mail is a cheap and easy way for a tiny company or scammer/con artist to try their business. Junk e-mail is an intrusion and you may face trouble of getting an e-mail. Spammers collect these e-mail addresses from chat rooms, websites, customer lists, newsgroups, etc. that may harvest users' address books and are sold to other spammers. They also use a practice known as ‘e-mail appending’ or ‘epending’ in which they may use known information about their target to search for the target's e-mail address. Most of the junk e-mail contains URLs to websites.

Create junk e-mail filter
The junk e-mail filter in Microsoft Outlook is turned on by default and the protection level is set to Low. This level may be designed to catch only the most obvious junk e-mail messages. You can make the filter more aggressive and by doing this it may catch legitimate messages sometimes. Any message that is caught by the junk e-mail filter is moved to a special junk e-mail folder.
Configure junk e-mail filter
You may lock down the settings to customize junk e-mail filter options by using the Outlook Group Policy template (Outlk12.adm). You may also configure default settings by using the Office Customization Tool (OCT) in which you may change the settings. The Office Customization Tool settings may be in the corresponding locations on the Modify user settings page of the Office Customization Tool.
By default, Microsoft Outlook 2010 does not download pictures or other content automatically, except when the external content comes from a website in the Trusted Sites zone or from an address or from a domain specified in the Safe Senders List. You may change these settings so that content from any of the zones, such as Trusted Sites, Local Intranet, Internet, etc. may be downloaded automatically or blocked automatically.
