Microsoft® Office 2010 Free Upgrade
For users of the older versions of Microsoft Office and is undecided on whether to upgrade to the latest version, this discussion would shed light on all aspects of the free upgrade. This includes the things you should do to ensure that you can rollback whenever you want and what to expect from the upgrade.
Every few years, Microsoft updates their software offerings with newer versions that offer more features and better usability. This is the case with Microsoft Office 2010, and upgrade to Microsoft Office 2007. To let users experience Microsoft Office 2010, Microsoft is offering a free upgrade for a limited time period. But prior to upgrading, you should consider a couple of things, including but not limited to:
- The features to expect and the time limit
- System requirements
- Things to do to ensure the capability of rolling back
The features to expect and the time limit
Although this is a time limited free version, Microsoft has opted to provide the full capabilities of the software without any restrictions. This should allow the user to fully experience the benefits provided by the software until October of 2010. That is when the free version expires and users are forced to either purchase the retail version or uninstall Microsoft Office 2010 from their computer.
Microsoft has not yet finalized the requirements for Microsoft Office 2010 as they are expected to do this at the release of the retail version in October. But tentatively, any computer that is capable of running Office 2007 would also be capable of running Microsoft Office 2010. Here’s a detailed list of the system requirements:
Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista , Windows 7
500Mhz or higher processor
256MB or higher system memory
1.5GB or more hard drive space
As the Microsoft Office 2010 Free Upgrade is a time limited trial version, the possibility exists that the user would not choose to purchase the retail version. At this point, you would need to uninstall Microsoft Office 2010 and revert to your older version. To avoid a full reinstall of the older version of Microsoft Office, you can opt to have your Microsoft Office 2010 and the older version coexist in your computer. This option obviously consumes more hard drive space but you can freely switch between the two versions and rolling back would simply require the removal of Microsoft Office 2010. If you opt to upgrade, which removes the older version, make sure that your installation CD and serial key for the older version is safely stowed away; so that you would still have the ability to install that version in the future.
