Microsoft® Office 2010 Volume
The volume activation of Microsoft Office 2010 means activating the product. Volume activation is required for volume license editions of Windows 7 and Office 2010, and should be integrated in your deployment process. Volume activation of Microsoft Office 2010 establishes a relationship between the software's product key and a particular installation of that software on a device. There are mainly two types of volume activation available. Key Management Service (KMS) and Multiple Activation Key (MAK). You can use either or both methods. Key Management Service (KMS) uses a host computer to establish an activation service on your local company network. With a KMS host you can activate thousands of computers at the same time when they regularly connect to the company network. If you use a KMS host to activate Windows, you can use the same host to activate Office 2010. With Multiple Activation Key (MAK), each computer activates Office 2010 with the Microsoft hosted activation servers over the Internet or by phone. MAK is recommended when you have fewer than 50 computers to activate, and for computers that are not regularly connected to the company network.
- Set up KMS host properly
- Respond to end-user notification
- Use volume activation management tools
Set up KMS host properly
KMS enables activations on local network. It does not require a dedicated system and can easily be co-hosted on a system that provides other services. You can use KMS host to activate Office 2010 clients as well as Windows 7. You should set up KMS host for proper volume activation of Microsoft Office 2010. Do not enter Multiple Office 2010 Activation Keys for the applications that you want to activate with your KMS host.
Respond to end-user notification
You should perform volume activation of Microsoft Office 2010 within 25 days of installation. If activation is not successful within 25 days, users will receive notification dialogs every time they launch an Office application. If the user closes the dialog, he or she will still be able to fully use all the features in Office. Office still has not been activated 30 days after installation; users will see notification dialogs every time an Office application is started. In addition, the title bar color will change to red. These visual indicators serve as reminders that users need to activate.
You can remotely manage volume editions of Windows and Office 2010 in your organization using GUI tools like VAMT 2.0 Beta. VAMT 2.0 allows you to get an overview of the licensing status of both Windows and Office 2010 installations. These tools are an easy way of getting information about the activation, registration and licensing details of the product and version you are using.
