Microsoft® Office 2010 Social Connector

The Microsoft Outlook Social Connector connects Microsoft Outlook 2010 to your personal and business social networks. Microsoft Outlook Social Connector is available as a part of the Microsoft Office 2010 Beta. Within Microsoft Outlook, you shall stay up to date on the status and activities of your contacts, whether they are from your organization’s network or from social networking sites on the web. By default, Microsoft Outlook Social Connector is minimized and appears in Microsoft Outlook 2010 as a solo line at the bottom of the Reading Pane. To use the Social Connector, click the 'Expand' arrow, or drag the top of the minimized pane up until it is of your desired size. This opens the 'People Pane' and a new area in Microsoft Outlook where you can view and access information that Microsoft Outlook Social Connector displays from social networks. Use the OSC’s Gallery View to see all the people you would interact with in an upcoming meeting.

If you are in a company that uses Microsoft Outlook 2010 and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2010, Microsoft Outlook Social Connector can automatically connect with your organization's SharePoint sites to display your colleagues' available activity items. Microsoft Outlook Social Connector robotically updates information about your professional and social network contacts while it is running. To connect Microsoft Outlook Social Connector to additional social networks, click on the 'View' tab, then click 'People Pane', and finally click 'Account Settings'.

Social Connector brings social views of your social group and friends right to your inbox. As you read your e-mails, glance down at the new People Pane to see the picture, name, and title of the sender. A rich collection of information about the sender is included. When you click a Microsoft Outlook item, the People Pane displays the contact information about the person associated with that item and the latest activity by that individual. This includes the latest status updates, comment posts, or messages from social networks, calendar items, and attachments and a lot more.

Microsoft Outlook Social Connector updates information in your Microsoft Outlook contact folders with any changes your friend makes to his social network profiles. This would help you be up-to-date and well-informed the next time you contact him, either professionally or socially. The OSC makes it easy to grow your network. Simply by clicking the ‘+’ symbol underneath the person’s picture, you can send a request to be their colleague on any of the networks you are connected to. The OSC also involuntarily synchronizes your colleagues from each of your connected networks and saves them as contacts in Microsoft Outlook. This lets you easily send messages, call, or synchronize contacts just as you would do with any other Microsoft Outlook contact.
